Beer and the European Football Championship
Posted by Rick Kempen, beer ambassador for Beer&cO on Jun 11th 2024
Just a little while to go and the European Football Championship will erupt again! From Friday 14 June June through Sunday, July 14, 2024, everything will be in the sign of this soccer festival. Of course we hope that the Dutch will go far - we will see! For us a nice opportunity to highlight some beers from the participating countries. so you can enjoy them twice over!
Not all countries
Not from all countries beer is readily available in
the Netherlands. For example, we know of virtually no examples of beers from Albania, Georgia
and Ukraine that are available here without any problem. And from a number
other countries you will have to look hard - count on the fact that you will, at the
best case, come across a lager from that country. These are mainly Portugal, Turkey,
Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Croatia and Poland - by the way, there is
a good chance you'll come across Hungarian or Polish beer of a different type.
From Switzerland, France, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Austria, on the other hand, it is
mostly pilsners.
Our favorite beer countries
A very large selection, and variety, of beers can be found
from the other participating countries: Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Scotland,
Spain, England, the Netherlands and Italy. From these countries, we in turn have made a
selection of favorites - these are the beers that the Dare to Drink
Different is sure to enjoy, during a competition. Maybe even during
multiple matches!
From Germany, of course, we are pulling open something from the world's oldest brewery: Weihenstephan. Or be it the classic Hefeweizen or the wonderfully drinkable Helles: a Weihenstephan always sounds good!
Nor do we rule out the occasional bottle of Jever lager or Jever Fun non-alcoholic. This crisp, North German lager lends itself to be enjoyed with a nice game of soccer.
When the Scots take the field, we will have of course have a BrewDog Punk IPA or BrewDog Black Heart at the ready. Beers full of flavor, character and inspiration - just like the Scots go wild on the turf!
A little further south we find England - we also have some favorite beers from there as well! How about Thornbridge Jaipur IPA? A delicious, tight and classic West Coast style IPA, full of flavor and aroma! For at halftime, we grab Thornbridge Edge Runner: a Kellerpils (unfiltered) that drinks away just as easily as its German origin beers.
For with the Red Devils, we run hot with St. Bernardus Witbier, we use the accessible but fresh KEREL IPA in the first half and Omer Vander Ghinste LeFort Tripel is always ready to warm up, for a kick-ass raid.
Mediterranean influences are found with Spain, in the form of Moritz Epidor and Moritz Lager. Technically they are Catalan beers, but since Barcelona provides quite a few players for the Spanish team, we still count this well.
In addition to these favorites, we have created a separate selection of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beers. Will you taste with us? Uiltje Bird of Prey 0.2, Estaminet Refined Lager 0.0, Jever Fun, BrewDog Punk IPA alcoholfree or BRLO naked.
