International Beer Day

International Beer Day

Posted by Rick Kempen, beer ambassador at Bier&cO on 24th Jul 2023

Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, is International Beer Day. Beer. We will celebrate then that we can enjoy beer, alone or with friends, and toast all the brewers and hospitality workers who brew or serve our beer. Beer makes every day a celebration, but this day is really meant to celebrate beer itself.

Origin

Like many holidays, the origins of International Beer Day are in America. It was at Jesse Avshalomov's bar in Santa Cruz, California where the first edition was celebrated in 2007. For Jesse, it remained a wonder how much people can enjoy beer, and how beer brings people together and connects them. He decided to put his favorite beverage in the spotlight on the first Friday of August.

The idea caught on, and in 2008 hundreds of pubs in America celebrated International Beer Day on the first Friday of August. It then took off like wildfire around the world. Participants in thousands of events worldwide are encouraged to give a gift on this day in the form of a tasty beer, while showing their gratitude to the brewers of that beer and those who tap or pour it in pubs and tasting rooms. To complete the celebration, people are challenged to step out of their comfort zone and try a beer they are not familiar with: a different style, from a different country, or of a different color than they normally drink. Anything to celebrate beer!
