Deposit on Cans - How does it work?

Why is there a deposit on Cans?

As you may know, from April 1, 2023, a nationwide and consumer-friendly deposit system will be operational for all metal beverage containers with a capacity of 3 liters or less. For this purpose, the government has set the minimum deposit amount at €0.15. It also has an impact on the webshop for us. We will phase in deposit cans on our webshop from April 1. How to recognize deposit cans and what impact this has for you, you can read in this blog.

Where can I return the deposit cans?

You can hand in your deposit cans and bottles from April 1, 2023 at thousands of different collection locations all over the Netherlands. Particularly at supermarkets larger than 200 square meters and staffed gas stations along the highway they will pay out the deposit. Other locations may decide for themselves whether they pay out the deposit or donate it to a recognized charity. Note: When returning cans, it is very important that they are not dented. Broken or dented cans will no longer be accepted.

What can products does this apply to and how do I recognize a deposit can?

Deposit Netherlands: "The deposit obligation concerns cans for both alcoholic drinks (such as beer, wine and mixed drinks) and non-alcoholic drinks (such as soft drinks, water, milk and juice). The deposit obligation does not apply to cans containing liquids that are not primarily intended to be drunk (such as lemonade syrup, thick juice, soups or condensed milk). This is because these are not directly drinkable and require further preparation before they can be consumed. Likewise, the deposit requirement does not apply to (canned) cans for non-liquids such as crisps, vegetables, etc."

You can recognize the deposit can by the logo on the cans:

What do deposit cans have to meet to be accepted?

The metal beverage packaging should have (1) the deposit logo and (2) a new EAN code. We and other beverage producers and suppliers are responsible for this and must register their products with Statiegeld Nederland. In addition, the barcode and shape must be intact. With dented cans, there is a risk that the RVM will not recognize the can.

How do I know I am buying deposit products on the webshop, such as deposit cans?

Currently the deposit is included in the prices of our products on the web shop. For products that contain a deposit, you will recognize at home by the logo on the label whether you receive a deposit in return. So always carefully check the label of your can or bottle that you bought in the webshop. We are working hard on a solution so that you can see how much deposit you get back on the amount in your shopping basket even before you buy.

Social impact introduction of deposit on cans

Tens if not hundreds of millions of cans end up in the environment every year. This has to change drastically. The social goal of the deposit system is to collect valuable material separately so that it can be reused for new cans or other useful application. In addition, the measure is expected to reduce the proportion of cans in litter thus hopefully significantly.
