What is pilsner?
Pilsner is a bottom-fermenting beer with a golden yellow color and a fresh, hoppy taste. What makes pilsner so special? The art of brewing. This popular style of beer, often called "pilsner," is fermented at low temperatures, between 6 and 13 degrees. As a result, the brewing process is slower and requires considerable skill.
Pilsners are known for their brightness, freshness and high drinkability. The ideal pilsner has a subtle, crisp hop bitterness.
Think you've already tasted everything in this category? Then challenge yourself with a surprising, unfamiliar pilsner. Your taste buds will thank you.
What is the story behind pilsner?
Pilsner originated in the Czech town of Pilsen. There, in 1842, brewer Josef Groll completed the work that Bavarian brewers had begun a decade earlier. His creation caught on immediately. Within a short time, pilsner had conquered the world and beer lovers abandoned their old familiar beer.
In the Netherlands it was still known as 'Beiersch beer' for a long time. Many breweries adopted that designation, so Amstel called itself "Beiersche Bierbrouwerij Amstel" at the time. A fun fact to share at the bar.
What is the difference between pilsner and lager?
Pils is a subtype of lager, but not every lager is lager. 'Lager' is a collective term for bottom-fermenting beers: beers that ferment at low temperature. Within it, pilsner is the fresh, golden variety with a distinctive bitter touch. A well-known branch of a versatile family.
