New England IPAs, or NEIPAs, are now staples of the beer industry. It has an average alcohol content of 5% to 8% (AVB) and is packed with hoppy fruit notes ranging from tropical fruit to stone fruit, which make the beer extra juicy.
What is New England India Pale Ale beer (NEIPA)?
It is one of our personal favorites, if not our favorite beer to brew here at Uiltje! No wonder NEIPA has become so popular among craft beer enthusiasts.
The history of NEIPA beer
Where exactly does NEIPA come from? The name actually gives it away ... from America's New England. This new kid on the block was first brewed at a brewery in Vermont, New England. Soon other breweries in that region started experimenting with brewing the NEIPA as well, and the rest is history.
What makes NEIPA beer so special? To explain that, we would like to tell you more about the way it is brewed. The first thing you notice when you drink a NEIPA is the taste: cloudy and juicy at the same time. This is because the beer is brewed with hops, hops and more hops. But, doesn't that happen all the time then? Yes, it does! But at NEIPA, we only add the hops at the end of the process, during dry hopping. This way, the hops provide extra lots of fruity aromas instead of too many bitters. Special yeast strains are added so that the fruity esters come out extra well, but also for the cloudy character. Finally, the brewers make sure the NEIPAs are not filtered, for an even fruitier, cloudier result! NEIPAs are less bitter and much smoother than other IPAs. So a very accessible, tasty beer!
The color of NEIPA beer
The story behind the creation of NEIPAs is mostly about the focus: more hops than malt. Yet it's also important to mention that many of these beers are brewed with oats and/or lactose, which gives NEIPA its creamy, smooth flavors.
If you ask a beer lover to describe a NEIPA, he will probably say: a cloudy beer that looks like a glass of fruit juice (and now for the vitamin C!). And that is exactly what a NEIPA should look like when viewed up close against the light: nice and cloudy, varying in color from pale gold to orange, AND with a good head on top! When NEIPA first appeared on the bar, people were confused and surprised at the same time. What exactly was this hazy beer? It looked nothing like the beer styles they were used to at the time. But it is precisely this unusual appearance that makes the beer so distinctive and totally different from the other, bright and light IPAs!
Different types of NEIPA beer
Although NEIPA is a fairly new beer style (it was only recognized as a beer style in the US in 2015), it hasn't stopped brewers from experimenting with it! Thanks to its juicy and fruity character, NEIPA beer has become hugely popular. In addition, it has made craft beer (IPAs in particular) even more accessible and appealing to new drinkers as a result.
Actually, there are no different types of NEIPA, but due to the high demand for the beer, it is brewed by breweries around the world. And each brewery does it in its own way, playing with different hop varieties and adding the hops to the beer as they see fit (way and moment). Experimentation is innovation! Especially when it comes to yeast. In the many yeast labs - think: mad scientists in big white coats - they are constantly discovering and developing new strains of yeast to extract even more flavors from hops. And that is exactly what makes a NEIPA so typically "NEIPA. At our Uiltje brewery, we use London Fog yeast for the beautiful hop flavors our Fresh & Fast beers!
NEIPA beer and food pairing
If NEIPA beer is like a tropical fruit juice, what's the best thing to eat with it? At least the fruit explosion in the beer means you don't have to hold back in the kitchen. A NEIPA drinks perfectly with spicy dishes, so if you are planning to put a fragrant curry on the table, this is the best excuse. It is also said that Thai curries become even more delicious with a NEIPA on the side. If you are not a curry type, how about Mexican cuisine? Fajitas and NEIPA are another fine match. And of course, as a Dutch brewery by heart, we can't forget NEIPA paired with a good piece of cheese. Tip: try a NEIPA with cheddar cheese!
